Cílem kursu je úvést studenty do základů problematiky oboru etika. Kurs etiku představí jako samostatný obor. Studenti si osvojí základní filosofické problémy etiky, znalost základních kategorií a terminologie etiky. Na základě těchto znalostí by se studenti měli umět orientovat v hlavních okruzích této filosofické disciplíny, a to s ohledem na další oblasti individuálního a společenského života.

Etika II    

 

Obsahem kursu je výklad a kritická diskuse základních myšlenkových proudů anglosaské etiky, utilitarianismu, kantianismu (či obecněji "konsekvencialismu" a "deontologie") a etiky ctností. Důraz bude kladen na diskusi o problémech, v jejichž etickém uchopení se jednotlivé proudy liší (pojetí zodpovědnosti, emocí, lásky a přátelství, pojetí já, apod.) - studenti tak budou vedeni k systematickému uchopení problému a obhajobě vlastního stanoviska.

Etika III    

 

V návaznosti na bakalářský kurs etiky budou studenti rozvíjet hlubší porozumění oboru etika s ohledem na hlavní filosofické přístupy k etice. Cílem kursu bude prohloubit dosažené znalosti a porozumění a pokusit se obhájit některý ze základních etikých směrů v konfrontaci s jinými.

Etika (ETIC)    

 

The aim of the course is to investigate what is the role of power and domination in the phenomena of child maltreatment, elderly abuse and animal cruelty. These abhorrent phenomena that many of us deem clear examples of evil and injustice, have several traits in common: They typically take place in the framework of a personal (family) relationship which, however, is not equal: it is a relationship of care, in which the abusing party is in the position of responsibility and power and the abused party is in the position of dependency and vulnerability. Whereas there is substantial literature on domestic abuse (including battering and rape) perpetrated by intimate partners, cruelty towards children, elderly and animals has received very little attention in the philosophical literature. The working hypothesis of this course is that key role in the perpetrator's motive is played by the temptation of power.

In order to investigate the hypothesis, the course will rely on two main branches of philosophical inquiry: philosophy of power and vulnerability studies. The first, more theoretical, part, will concentrate on the conceptual analysis of power and domination, on the practices of gaining and maintaining power, such as coercion and manipulation, on the psychology of power abuse (and its relation to cruelty and sadism) and on the vices related to power, such as arrogance and servility. The second, more applied, part, will turn to the study of particular cases of abuse that are to be found in the vulnerability inflected ethics of care. We will distinguish different forms of abuse, physical, sexual and emotional and discuss their impact on the different cases in view of their specific vulnerabilities. Child maltreatment has a special place here since it does not only compromise the actual wellbeing of the child, but also her future development as a healthy adult.

The course will be conducted in English. It will have the form of seminar discussion of a given text preceded by a short introductory lecture.
