Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, University of Pardubice cordially invites you to attend an international workshop on The Logos of God and Human Progress in Philo of Alexandria and Early Christian Philosophy taking place in Pardubice, 10-11 September 2026.
The term Logos has various meanings in the works of Philo of Alexandria. The Logos is described as an aspect or property of God and connected with the world of ideas. In another sense, it is also considered to be part of the world: Philo characterizes the Logos as a “cutter” who divides everything in the nature and as an immanent bond of the universe (analogously to the world soul in Plato’s Timaeus or to the Stoic Logos). Philo also emphasises an analogy between the Logos and the human mind. As a casting, fragment or effulgence of the divine Logos, human mind can explore the whole universe and search for God.
In Christianity, the Logos is one of the most important Christological titles. Christ is the mediator who reveals his Father and enables people to participate in him; according to Origen, in the eschatological perspective, man is to reach the place of God’s Son and from there look at God with a knowing gaze. Human spiritual progress is, therefore, only possible through Christ, the Door to the Father.
The aim of the workshop is to discuss different ways how human spiritual and moral progress relates to and is enabled by the Logos of God.
