Abstract

The project will examine orientation towards the future in the writings of Philo of Alexandria and other authors inspired by him, especially Origen, Gregory of Nyssa and Ambrose of Milan. According to Philo, moral progress and increase in knowledge presuppose constant focus for the real good; this good exceeds the possibilities of human knowledge. The longing for the still unknown good, as well as its expectation, also played a significant role in early Christian writers. The project will study and compare these different forms of desire for the future good, its expectation and anticipation.
